The American Humanist Association:

It’s Mission and Initiatives

This month, join our very own Dr. John Hooper as he presents the American Humanist Association!

The American Humanist Association (AHA) is one of the nation’s largest freethought organizations, dedicated to helping people create a just society driven by compassion rooted in reason not supernatural hypotheses. The Pittsburgh Freethought Community (PFC) is an official chapter of AHA.

Current AHA initiatives will be described along with some suggestions on how PFC and other local organizations and activists get involved. Highlights of this Year’s AHA Annual Conference, which ends the weekend before this talk, will be also be presented.

John Hooper (Ph.D. in Chemistry, Carnegie Mellon University) is a retired scientist and research director, having pursued a career in molecular imaging and spectroscopy.

Shortly before retiring, he received a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts degree from Clark University in an area of avocational interest: epistemology.  Hooper has held local and national leadership positions in organizations involving naturalism, Humanism, and Unitarian Universalist social action. He is immediate past president of both the Unitarian Universalist Humanist Association (HUUmanists.org) and the Secular Coalition for America Education Fund. He presently serves on the executive committees of the boards of the American Humanist Association and The Institute for Humanist Studies. John is a cofounder and enthusiastic supporter of both the Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County (CT) and the Pittsburgh Freethought Community.
