Botany of Desire: Plants-eye View. Michael Pollan.

Pollan engagingly describes how people and domesticated plants have formed a reciprocal relationship. He links four fundamental human desires—sweetness, beauty, intoxication, and control—with the plants that satisfy them: the apple, the tulip, marijuana, and the potato.

The plants have evolved to satisfy humankind’s most basic yearnings. But just as we’ve benefited from these plants, the plants have also done well by us. All these plants care about is what every being cares about on the most genetic level: making more copies of itself. And we’ve helped them make many more copies. Did I choose to plant these potatoes, or did the potato make me do it? Who is really domesticating whom?

Our library has about 20 copies. Available at Amazon for as low as $1.99 used + shipping. Available on Kindle and iTunes. The DVD steams free on Amazon Prime Video. Our library also has 5 copies of the DVD.
