Discussion Group 2 - South Hills: Apologetics

October’s Topic: Apologetics of Humanism, science, and reason.

The term apologetic is derived from a Greek word meaning “speaking in defense”. It is often associated with arguments in defense of religion, but also applies to literary and philosophical works like Plato’s Apology, in which Socrates and his ideas are literally on trial. This month, let’s talk about how we can effectively speak in defense of our own ideas against those who oppose them.

In order to defend our values, we need to define them. How would you sum up your basic philosophy? Without engaging in any current debate, what are some areas where we may not have much of a consensus?

It is often the case that when one side in an argument comes on strong, the other side pushes back even harder, no matter how effective the cases which are being made. How can we try to avoid this effect in our own discussions and debates?

How should we as a community provide consensus, outreach, and mutual support for our members and ideas? When forming arguments for our position, how can we be sure to avoid the same group-think that we criticize in other organizations, while still coming to useful conclusions?

Please join us to discuss these questions and more. As always, our goal is to discuss social issues, science, and philosophy in an open setting.

Discussion Group 2 - Mt. Lebanon meets in a conference room at the Sunnyhill Unitarian Universalist Church. Please use the side door entrance on the right side of the building, NOT the main entrance.
