January Topic: Human Genetic Engineering

This month's topic is the subject of human genetic engineering. This has become highly relevant owing to the birth of CRISPR twins from a research program in China. What are the ethical considerations for this going forward? Currently, the focus is on editing genes to reduce the likelihood of certain incurable diseases. What about genetic diseases or weaknesses which ARE treatable? And what are the possible unintended consequences? What about genetic engineering for certain desirable traits such as eye or hair color? Or physical stamina? Or the current standards of "beauty"? What happens if someone screws up and the resultant offspring is deformed or stunted or mentally unstable?
