Can Humanism Overcome Human Nature?
Rage is all the rage. After decades of humanitarian progress, racism, misogyny, violence and hate have made a sudden and seemingly global return.
Does this show that we're trapped in endless cycles of history on the rough terrain of human nature? Or can humanism enable us to soar above hatred, war, and injustice? These questions appear to hang in the balance. Clay Farris Naff, science and religion correspondent for The Humanist magazine, taps the ideas of great thinkers, past and present, and the recent findings of science for answers.
Clay Farris Naff is a former Tokyo correspondent for UPI, a former freelance NPR reporter, and the author or editor of more than a dozen science books. He lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he heads a nonprofit literacy organization.
