Topic: Society’s needs and rights vs. Individual rights
Moderator: Bill K.
There has always been and always will be a tension between the rights and/or freedoms of the individual and the needs and rights of an orderly and peaceful society. But as our society has become more complex and more diverse, this tension has also increased and has become a more difficult issue than ever before. Where is the line between the rights of the individual and the rights of society as a whole? More importantly, where should this line be? Is it possible to have a “one size fits all” rule for determining the limits of these freedoms?
Should we always err on the side of the society? Or should we err on the side of the individual?
