Join PFC Member Scott Miller for a discussion of Barbara Kingsolver's historical novel The Poisonwood Bible.   The novel's main character, Nathan Price, is an evangelical missionary, determined to convert the "savages" to Christianity even though (as one reviewer describes) the local people are reluctant to abandon their traditional deities (and fearful of baptizing their children in the crocodile-infested waters of the nearby river). The novel is set against one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the twentieth century: the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, the CIA coup to install his replacement, and the insidious progress of a world economic order that robs the fledgling African nation of its autonomy. The story is narrated by Nathan's wife and daughters, who arrive in the Congo with racial preconceptions forged in 1950s Georgia. Even though it is widely condemned by some Christians for presenting an unflattering view of Christianity, and is often the target of school librarby book bans,  the novel is very popular, and was a New York Times Bestseller, Pulitzer Prize Finalist, and  An Oprah's Book Club Selection.
