Discussion Group 1 - Squirrel Hill

Democracy, Education and the Right to Vote
Democracies distribute a kind of decision-making power among their citizens, and “crowdsource” the selection of their leaders. This decentralization of power is arguably democracy’s finest feature, but a citizenry can vote in decidedly unwise ways, and thereby install unwise rulers. In fact, a country’s citizens can succumb to a kind of mob mentality, and invite a tyrant to rule them. In principle, education can protect a democracy against this fate. But what kind of education can protect a country from groupthink? Should only those who get this kind of education be allowed to vote?

PFC Monthly discussion groups are open to all - if the topic interests you, and you wish to engage in rational and/or evidence-based dialogue, you'll be welcome! Casual dress. Discussion is moderated but informal - speak up as much or little as you wish.

Discussion topics are announced in advance of the event and are chosen for their controversy or differences of opinion around the subject.
