Parental Rights to Mold and Limit Children?
Moderators: Bill K and Andy N
Do parents own their children? This month's topic revolves around the subject of parental rights with respect to public educational curricula and school libraries. Do parents have the right to prevent their children (and other children) from being taught science or social norms that conflict with their religious beliefs? Should religious liberty arguments allow parents to require the educational system to adhere to their personal views while censoring other viewpoints that align with broader societal goals of promoting science, rational decision-making, mutual respect, and societal cohesion.
Time permitting, we can also delve into other aspects of parental rights such as corporal punishment and psychological abuse.
