Discussion Questions

  • Nonverts includes personal interviews of nonverts, who were formerly religious and no longer are. Did any of these stories particularly resonate with you? Were they relatable?
  • The book presents survey data pertaining to this trend. Was there anything that was surprising or new to you?
  • Bullivant attributes the below three factors to the rise of Nones/NovertsDo you agree or are there other factors  equally or more impactful?
    •  The New Atheism is able to position itself as patriotic (as opposed to unpatriotic) after the ending of the Cold War in the 1980s.
    • Appearance of the Internet
    • People are becoming more comfortable being nonreligious because there are more nones.
  • Bullivant came from a non-religious family and converted to Catholicism at the age of 38. Do you view the book Nonverts as an objective study/account from a researcher/sociologist, or one that is biased by a religious perspective/objective.
