Women's Discussion Group
Topic: Intersectionality Host: Nicole C
This month's discussion topic is intersectionality--an increasingly important word to know.
What is intersectionality? It's the interconnected nature of social categories such as (but not limited to) race, class, and gender as they apply to a person or group. When these categories overlap to create membership in more than one oppressed group, they can create interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. For example, one could understand the difference between the discrimination faced by a Black man, a Black woman, and a Black trans woman using the lens of intersectionality.
Check out this video by the creator of the concept Kimberlé Crenshaw as she describes how she came to understand and name the concept back in 1989.
