The World Without Us

By Alan Weisman

Wednesday, June 26, 2024, 7:00 – 8:30 pm

Host: Karen C.

What if humans just vanished from the Earth right now…what would happen to our planet in a week, a year, a millennium? In his book, The World Without Us, Alan Weisman draws on the expertise of engineers, atmospheric scientists, zoologist, marine biologists, oil refiners, nuclear scientists, art conservators and others to describe what the planet might be like after humans are no longer here.

By speaking to experts in diverse fields and visiting the places that have escaped recent human activity to discover how they have adapted to life without us, Weisman shows what the planet might be like today and in the future. Could our planet’s climate recover? How would nature destroy our cities and creations? Would other animals and plants change? Through this exploration, Weisman shows the impact we have had on our planet while arriving towards solutions that need not depend upon our demise.

Alan Weisman is an award-winning journalist whose reports have appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, Discover, and on NPR, among others. He is a senior radio producer for Homelands Productions and teaches international journalism at the University of Arizona. Anthony Lukas Book Prize, the Orion Prize, and the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award.
